cannot send a picture(.epd) serially from hyperterminal!

hello everyone,

I am trying to transmit a picture (.epd file) serially from my PC's usb port to the microcontroller (uC's SPI).

I am using FTDI Basic Breakout to convert USB to serial port and then connect RX, and TX to the microcontroller.

I am using hyperterminal, I set it to the right COM port and right baud rates and ... then I choose Transfer-> send file-> select my .epd file then -> send. however it opens up a window and nothing happens. I dont know what this could mean? I am sure I am connected to the right port( FTDI PORT11), and all the connections are right. I have attached the picture of screen that i am getting.

any ideas?

thanks

It's been a very long time since I've used HyperTerminal so this could be wrong, but here's what I remember.  To send a file as opposed to text over a serial line, you need to be using a file transfer protocol like Xmodem, Ymodem, or Kermit.  Both ends of the serial link need to be running software that supports the protocol.  Otherwise, one side starts the transfer and then hangs while waiting for the other side to acknowledge.

I think there's a HT menu option to select what file transfer protocol to use.  You can also send plain ASCII text, which doesn't have any acknowledgements or error handling.

    Hope this helps.

To send a file as opposed to text over a serial line,

Over a telephone type modem, or when sending 8 bit data over a 7 bit link..  These days the problems X/Y/Zmodem were designed to solve (like the modem eating +++ and other escape characters) are mostly irrelevant. A serial connection to a microcontroller from an FTDI chip where the distance is probably only a couple of inches and is using a slow speed is also unlikely to suffer corruption requiring checksums and retransmits. Unfortunate then that terminal programs make it harder than it needs to be to transmit straight 8 bit binary data even if that's all that's really required, but those terminal programs are mostly just living in the past and probably haven't seen much attention in a lot of years
