Back-EMF Sensing on a stepper motor possible?

Catwell
Catwell over 15 years ago
As you know, most common stepper motors have 200 steps per revolution. And many stepper motors are driven in micro-steps. (1/8th micro-stepping is often chosen. Which gives 1600 steps per rev. 200 * 8 = 1600)

Is it possible to detect the BEMF during micro-step commutation? If so, exact position and speed could be detected. In essence, creating a closed loop system without an encoder.  Any experience or thoughts?

The position is determined by currents and load . BEMF does not indicate either of these. It indicates a disturbance . Even so, you can't use BEMF in most cases. This is because a driver has to smoothen…

    Hi,

I am working  as electronics engineer on closed loop systems based on brushed DC motors and on "open" loop systems based on stepper motors.

Questions why our company did not have closed loop systems based on stepper motors , may I develop "new" approach with introducing closed loop subsystem in my new stepper motor controller design that has revolution encoder inputs?

For me I have made my answer:

    1. It is impossible to achieve higher resolution than step or microstep size.

    2. You must believe that motor makes movement action exact same count of steps or microsteps as was commanded from controller.

    3. Feedback device (revolution encoder or back EMF sensor) allows to detect missing action of motor due to motor overload or due to resonanse effects in mechanical system.
