3-Axis Magnetometer, need of guidance...

Former Member
Former Member over 15 years ago

Have been looking for 3-Axis Magnetometers, that can provide roll, pitch and yaw for an object

But i don't have any experience using them.

The sensor will be used in an outdoor environment, away from large electric fields.

Have anyone any experience in using these, and what was the problem's you have encountered ?

I would also like to know what model's you have been using.

Do you really need a magnetometer, or are you just needing tri-axial orientation for an object?

    Justin

I need tri-axial orientation for an object from as many sources as possibly.

Since I will be using sensor-fusion to melt them together.

I have chosen to use an IMU, to get rotation and translation information,

and been considering tilt-sensors like the ones http://www.frederickscom.com/ produce.

But I am unsure if the tilt-sensor is fit for an outdoor environment, where some shaking will be present.

For fusion-reference for the translational part, I will be using a RTK-gps (10-20Hz).

What I need is other sensors that can measure roll, pitch and yaw, for an object in a outdoor environment.

If you have any experience, in using magnometers or any other sensor for these kinds of measurement,

I would like to here want experience you have.

You are not clear about bandwidth, resolution, sensitivity, etc. There are a number of companies selling chip solutions that may do the job, which a quick web search would locate. Honeywell have a 3 axis magnetometer, STMicroelectronics are about to produce a fully integrated 3 axis accelerometer/magnetometer http://www.st.com/stonline/products/families/sensors/motion_sensors/lsm303dlh.htm . There are also a number of sources in Asia, but the parts may be more difficult to source. I have used the Honeywell HMC1043 in a low power hand held wireless dynamometer with no problems. They do. however, require analogue support electronics around them, see their applications notes, which are extensive. The ST part is fully self contained with an I2C bus.
