Trying to understand what parts I would need for a treadmill

I am creating a treadmill and really only need a few components. Obviously, I need a microcontroller, but I also need to count steps and have the ability to transmit that step data via Bluetooth LE to a mobile device. I was thinking the Freescale KW30Z, but wasn't sure what else I would need. Do I need some kind of dev board?

I'm a web programmer, so I can code what I need once I get the data to the mobile device, I've just never programmed microcontrollers before. Any help would be appreciated.

Why do you need to count and transmit step data Bluetooth for a treadmill? You can just power on a motor to run treadmill. Not very complicated.

Trying to understand how it works. My background is programming, but on the business side of things. I want to learn how to program in the device world. This was an idea I had to get me learning.

You can just buy a bluetooth evaluation kit, then can learn the programming, or engage a professional to design you the hardware for you to program.

I'm trying to identify all the pieces I would need to help me do this. Does element14 sell all the pieces? That's what I was hoping for. I actually live very near the MCM Electronics warehouse, but they don't seem to sell the stuff I think I need, so they had links to Element14, which I believe is another owned subsidiary?
