"It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever!" No we're not talking about the Terminator, but rather a modular robot that can reconfigure itself after one part stops working.
Scientists David Johan Christensen, Alexander Sprowitz, and Auke Ijspeert have designed a computer simulation of a quadruped robot made out of Roombots that senses when one part is not moving correctly and works to overcome the problem by altering it's movement (see video below). Roombots are robots made of multiple simple robotic modules that can attach and detach (Wikipedia: Self-Reconfiguring Modular Robotics). This is not the first robot with adaptive capability. Back in 2006 Josh Bongard, Viktor Zykov, and Hod Lipson of Cornell University designed a multi-legged robot that can sense and adapt when one of its legs malfunction.
