    Hi,

    If you look at the description of the Velleman K8048 (see below), you'll notice this is a very old board which has only RS232 conectivity (no USB !!!)...the list of compatible OS also shows it is not even validated against Microsoft latest OSs :

    ==============================================================================================================

    System  requirements IBM compatible PC, Pentium or better (may not work on some  laptop computers) Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 and XP CD-ROM free serial  RS232 port

    ==============================================================================================================

    I would rather recommend the excellent boards from Mikroelektronika which are numerous and most important...up to date ;=)

    regards

    For absolute beginners out there you can also try the devices from PICAXE - free programming software uses a 'basic' language or flowchart to program the beasties. Most countries have a local  distributor, the chips are a few dollars each. Can be programmed via a USB to serial cable. Aimed at schools for educational purposes.

    More info can be found at http://www.rev-ed.co.uk/picaxe/
