Video live stream

Hey,

I am a student in my final year and I am considering making an autonomous fishing boat. I will have a android tablet to transmit data like video feed, water temperature and gps location. From a substantial research I was considering to use the PIC32MZ1024EFH144. It has different versions (64 or 100 pins), which I will select in the end. However, I would like to know what is the best way to transmit the data (especially live video) to my tablet wirelessly. The best way to get it was using a TX and RX. However, I could not find substantial information to verify tha it could actulayy be done. Note that all data has to be displayed in an application that I will design. Using the same transmission I should also be able to control the boat in case of emergency.

Hving tried wifi modules, I cannot get it to work due to bandwidth issues, as there are homes around with Wi-Fi. Any other solution?

    Hi Panayiotis,

If you know the intended bitrate (for digital video) or bandwidth (for analog video) then you can make a determination. If the video is encoded then your processor needs to have the performance and resources like sufficient memory, to be able to handle this. You'd also need to investigate if code already exists to handle the encode/decode, or if you intend to write this yourself, and how much time you need to allow for this, since you likely have only a certain amount of time for this project. Libraries can exist to help but often they are targeted towards processors running an OS like Linux.

Also, there are different flavours of wireless, and people manage to stream high definition movies wirelessly, so the idea that there are bandwidth issues due to too many homes sounds odd. Your wireless modules may not support (say) 5GHz band.

Also, I can't see how from extensive research you've already decided on the microcontroller, but not on the technologies which you will use.

Finally, if the project will be an autonomous device, where are your sensor (including perhaps video) processing? How are decisions being made? Perhaps you can intelligently send video when needed, and reduce your live feed requirements. If the core of your project is autonomous capability, it doesn't make sense to spend much time designing an elaborate live video feed; why not use an off-the-shelf wireless video baby monitor for instance. For my final project, it was concerned with a particular software task, I wrote some examples and built some example hardware to use it, but these were just to demonstrate the behaviour of the software; I concentrated specifically on that part of the project, where the project would be scored.

I hope these comments can help you decide what to research and what decisions you may need to make for your project.
