Sounds like a great product for PWM control of a DC motor. Using tach for feedback to control speed.

I like to do an automated door control combined with an ir and/od radar sensor with counter, etc... best of all would be to combine it with microsoft kinect

Bird table bird detector, use light,ultrasound or death ray to detect birds on the bird table so you can go and look out the window at the birds or when you are automatically feeding the fish or Pat's Rabbits
