Rs232 extra device question

Hi everyone

 

I have a PLC controlling a HMI via RS232, I have been asked if I can join another device to this which can recieve data only, but is 15m away. I have created a drawing of how I think the thing should be conncted up but Im not sure.

 

Wiring:

 

Connect pin 3 via diode to the new pin 3

Connect pins 5 together (grounds)

 

on the new plug create a null modem configuration by connecting together pins 1, 4 & 6

and connecting together 7 & 8

 

I know RS232 is very very old, but hoping that someone out there knows a little more than me.

  • What is your additional device?

     

    RS232 has a max length of 50 feet -- this can usually be exceeded.

     

    The higher the Baud rate the shorter the distance.   If you are running at 9600, you will probably be fine with 15m.

     

    You shouldn't have to add a diode -- just split the transmit line(3?) from the originating device and run to receive(pin 2) on the new device.

     

    Only run the two(2) lines to the new device.    As for handshaking, usually RTS/CTS and DSR/DTR/DCD -- or whatever works.
