    Hi Nick,

I wanted your advice on buying an audio ADC, I am after 24bit 192KHz(or better) stereo, best possible quality, must be 16 bit 44.1KHz compatable. I am currently interested in the Wolfson chips, I havent found anything to better these, or maybe I am missing something in my search, could you please advise?.

    John.

    Hi, John -

You are looking for a 24-bit ADC of the "best possible quality" but "quality" is relative in that the perception of quality depends upon the person and just what he or she means by that term. However, I do believe that Wolfson makes some of the best audio ADCs that you will find, as does AKM Semiconductor. TI also has some pretty good audio ADCs.

Sometimes people get "hung up" with the many pins and bypasses required by some products. You can often eliminate some of the bypass capacitors, but bypassing as the manufacturer recommends will provide you with better performance than if you did not follow recommendations completely. Also, printed circuit board layout is extremely critical. Pay close attention to the flow of all currents and you should be able to get all the performance indicated by the data sheet. Sometimes you will get performance better than the data sheet indicates, although this is rare.
