Does a burned/charred FR-4 type board conduct electricity?

I am doing a repair on a guitar tube amp.  The circuit board has some burned up traces so I'm planning on re-routing around the bad traces with stranded wire.  I have heard that I need to grind away all the black soot because it will conduct electricity.  Is this true?

  • Hi Duane,

    It would be best to scrape away and clean the charred (soot) areas of the pc board a bit because "carbon" is a conductor.  Also, make sure you use stranded wire with the proper current and voltage ratings for the repair.  Vacuum Tubes operate off high voltages as you may know.
