Power Supply for Home lab?

The Main reason folks build there own is first and formost for the experiance  (Kinda New EE 101) , it can teach you a whole load about electronics, OpAmps, Power Transistors, Feedback, Transient Response, Voltage References, Temperature stability to name just a few and at the end of it you have something usefull

The second reason is because you have a few of the expensive parts laying arround already and there just the ticket to build a PSU on a budget, Im talking about perhaps a transformer from an old AMP, got a box to put it in, have an LCD or LED display to show the volts and amps (Or an analogue one) etc. Then the cost is minimal for the rest and you still get the benefit of learning and something usefull

If the reason you need one is purly professional / Must have one for the hobby but are an experianced EE then yes, often much cheaper to simply buy one, albeit low end.

My series on building one is aimed at the folks wanting to learn and gain the experiance, and now im going to extend this to making it fully programable, even remotly so it will potentially be comparable with ones exceeding many hundreds of dollars.

You can't go wrong with an LM317 operating in Linear regulation mode!

Making its voltage programmable is as simple as incorporating a I2C/SPI/Serial controlled resistor.

Actually, the CBR is caused by stars.

When a star begins to fuse material, it creates high frequency photons.

As time passes, the photons become lower frequency as they have more mass.

Contrary to popularly stated theory, a star is very old by the time it produces visible and IR photons.

Case in Point is my Reply to DAB, about CBR.

To DAB: I spent some time at AT&T Bell Labs in the early 1980's, this maybe 3 years after Scientists Penzias/Wilson won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1978 for work on CBR. I was more on the implementation/field-testing than Pure Research of P&W. Smart People but suffered from NIH syndrome (Not Invented Here). If it was not done at Bell Labs it was No Good. Talk about Hubris. Where is AT&T Bell Labs today?

AAR this was also to demonstrate how I could have abbreviated/expanded on my reply based on more info about my Target Audience. Anybody outside the USA, even know what AT&T stands for? Or do they know Bell Labs?. Context is everything, please provide me w/ context. If you are in a country using the Metric System, I will use Metric Units and the Centigrade Scale. Please help me to provide better tailored info.

It sounds like you had access to some really neat projects.

I am a disabled/retired systems engineer with an extensive physics background.

Over the last four years or so, I used complex problems as a way to distract my brain from the pain caused by my injury.

During that exercise, I found a very simple way for the universe to work, which I documented in my book "I Killed Schrodinger's Cat!"

I have not found any need for the Higgs or any other Boson to make the universe work.

I have documented a stellar fusion process that creates photons as part of the sequence at each level of fusion.

As the star makes more massive objects, these are entangled to produce photons, so the more massive/lower frequency photons are created as the fusion process progresses.

If you are interested, I love to talk about the processes I have defined.  My coauthor and I are still working on the theory and we are currently redefining the Periodic Table as we have found a better way to account for what is inside of atoms.

So far we have identified photon exchange as the main way for atoms to exchange mass and energy, which confirms thermodynamics measurements, but eliminates the need for entropy.

I too am a retired due to illness.

Unlike DAB who is very clever I just make pot luck guesses and also try to add a bit of levity to get through my days.

I'll make pot luck remarks such as;

  "DC is just AC with a very low frequency!"

But unlike Tesla I won't make statements like;

  "c = infinity" (until it is proven or disproven.)

Very Compact (or Very Expanded) depending upon which part of the Universe we're in.

(By my definition - Multiverses are encompassed in a single Universe!)

A bit like a Venn Diagram!

IDK (I Don't Know) about Photons possibly having Mass? At certain Levels/Situations Matter/Energy are interchangeable (E=M^C2 ). I guess I should continue that MOOC QM course I started  at www.coursera.edu. the QM course offered by the USA university of Maryland. I got as far as the Time-dependent Schrodinger Equation. But stopped b/c #1) I had got my Answer to the Q: Why QM? A (being): small semiconductor geometries are subject to QM Effects. #2) The math was getting Hairy and I suddenly remembered that I had given away my Math Bible, Krezszig "Advanced Engineering Mathematics" ^C2 . {sorry about the artifact, I am slowly starting to use the Equations Editor). W/O much success as evident by my mistakes here.

How I miss that book, I guess I can get a copy over the Internet.What book did you have for Fresh/Soph General Physics? What Calculus Text? US or outta country Higher Ed institution? I was BSEE 73' Syracuse University, JD 1990 NYLS.

You might saw I went from a 2nd Rate Engr School to a 3rd Rate Law School. My trajectory is definitely downward.

WRT "Hoarding", I take an approach similar to the NYS EPTL (Estates Powers, Trust Law) by analogy. You cannot execute a "Will" w/o knowing the metes & bounds of your Personal/Real (land) Property. Similarly, if you know what you have and can show a compelling reason to "keep" such, in my eyes, it is Not Hoarding. IDK about in other jurisdictions outside of NYS (USA), but this is pretty much English Common Law based. So you guys/gals in NZ and/or Aussie Land are covered

It looks like eash one is about 60$ odd, plus a fee for certificate. I did not look too hard but could not see where it was free, If I can do it for free I would consider running through it for fun

To Peter: It is FREE. when you forgo Certification.  Just enroll yourself, if it asks for Credit Card Info, just close the Browser Window. Hope to be able to bounce Ideas off of you when the Course starts.

That screen of yours was what I got prior to when offered the again [25JAN16]  AAR there are work-arounds if you do Not want Certification. You were able to get registered at coursera.edu for the "Intro to Power Electronics" course, Correct? B/C Peter Oakes is/had problems w/ registration. He is I believe is in Canada, while you are in  NZ, correct? AAR in that screen Shot, he posted [17JAN16 923PM] on the Left side of the Photograph are two Receptacles (1-Red, 1-Blk) They are Female receptacles that can accommodate "Banana Plugs". Remember our discussion about Bananas?
