What is the name of the sensor I need to solve this problem...

I need to put an item on a pad.

The user will put a card on the pad.

 

The card should have 2 sensors on it and the pad should be able to output a byte of data based on which sensor is touching the pad.

 

What kind of sensor should I be researching?

What is the name of the sensor pad?

 

Thanks for any help....  Im not very knowledgeable about electronics but Im working on a design of fun little product.

  • You may be looking for a force gauge, this measures the force that is place upon it and outputs a voltage. Look at phidgets.com to find easy ways to prototype this (they sell interface systems and force gagues). You can tell the difference between items with the gauge. Another thing you might want to look at is RFID tags, (you can find these at sparkfun.com with serial interfaces) you can put the tags on your card or other item and it will be able to give the ID of the item.
