Nico teWinkel's expertise: Software Engineer who  specialises in firmware, C and Java.

A little about Nico: "I've been a software engineer for more than  20 years. Electronics has been a hobby every since I played with the  old 10-in-1 and 200-in-1 RadioShack kits back in the 70s when I was just  a kid. Right now I'm working part time for a local hardware company  creating firmware for their devices, which brings together my software  engineering skills with my electronics hobby/obsession, and I'm having a  great time!

Software engineering in C and Java, including  iPhone and Android development. Currently developing firmware for Texas  Instruments chips using CCS. Any project involving interfacing Android  with external devices would really spark my interest."

    hi Niko teWinkel,

I want to know how to write firmware for chinese multimedia players(mp4/mp5 players) and make their binary files and how they are burn into the ROM from the manufacturer.

How these files are able to boot these players including soc chips from chinese manufacturers like sunplus...ARM926ej  is generally used in these portable players...

I want to customize these binary image files and want to play with these....kindly provide me players firmware knowledge and which is the development platform for these files?is it some kind of OS..?

    thanks in advance

    Hi Akshay,

That sounds like a cool project, but I honestly have no idea how to do that, sorry.

In general it would depend on the chip the manufacturer uses, but also without the source code I don't know if it's even possible to reverse engineer the firmware from a chip.

And I don't even know where to refer you to get that kind of help, except maybe to try good ole Google.

    Cheers,

    -Nico

    hi,

I had googled this a lot but all in vain .... anyhow i do have the firmware binary files with me and the burning tool of Sunplus chips with me ..My main aim is to expand the functionalty in my PMP/chinese mp4/mp5 players just like in windows or linux we add hardware device using device drivers and  make my own OS for these from scratch and I am reaaly curious to know that without any logical architecture of operating system how these players are providing multimedia functionality and hardware is able to run them...and how a cluster/bunch of binary files are able to build and provide the user interface to play songs and videos.if this would have been linux sort of something then it must be kernel bounded OS.....

these cheap chinese players will be of great help to understand hardware and software which manufacturers like Sunplus,Rockchip,Actions are into market....

anyhow if you find it just let me know and keep me abreast with the current update.....

    bye
