To be honest, I'd have a hard time recommending engineering as a career to a young person nowadays. While there's a lot of press about an "engineering shortage", I read a lot more about major layoffs and mergers that result in even more layoffs. The bean counters are moving all the engineering jobs to the cheapest labor countries no matter how much this costs the company in the long run. In the USA, Wall Street invariably rewards companies that lay people off instead of penalizing them for having gotten themselves into a situation where layoffs can even be considered.
If you're a born engineer http://www.element14.com/community/thread/44018/l/you-know-youre-an-engineer-when you should still try to do engineering as a career because you'll be unhappy doing anything else. If you're looking for a good future and aren't picky, I'd suggest becoming a spine doctor. Everywhere I look I see young people with their heads bent over playing with mobile devices. These young people are going to have 70-year-old spine problems in their 40s and 50s, and spine doctors will have plenty of work.
