Accidentally ran 12V through ATTiny85

I'm working on a development board for the ATTiny85, but I started making an LED flasher to pass the time while my parts are in the mail. My LED flasher used 12V, so when my parts finally arrived I put them in and plugged the circuit in to my power supply... which was still on 12V. The ATTiny85 got extremely hot. Will it still work? I haven't got my board to a working state yet and would like to know if I need to order more parts. Thank you.

The rated supply voltage is 2.7 V ~ 5.5 V so there is a good chance the ATTiny is damaged. The best way to find out is by applying 5v and seeing if it works.

there seems to be a problem with many of the inexpensive dev kits lacking power input protection. its relatively trivial to add but often forgotten about.

IMHO its worth it. you can get a bad reputation selling things that are easy to destroy.

Very true.

I was in-fact very impressed when putting together the PSU for the RasPiBox to find a bridge rectifier at the input terminals. This essentially auto-corrected reverse polarity on the DC supply, removing the potential for an electrolytic capacitor related firework display.
Cost of rectifier - neglible
Protection provided - Priceless!
