Please help to choose a power source

Hi All,

I am definitely not an expert in electrics, and in need of advice. I live with wife and son at a small island in Thailand. We have powercuts (blackouts) sometimes. They don't last long, three-four hours at most, but when happen at night, it is impossible to sleep, as it quickly gets very hot. Our son is 2,5 yo and it is important he gets uninterrupted sleep.

What we really need is a battery, a power source, a power bank, that will power up one or two stand alone fans that we have, for up two 3-4 hours. I have attached the picture with the technical label on our fans.

The island is small, not too many competent electricians around to install and service something complicated, I am really looking for a all-in-a-box solution. So far the only product identified is Duracell Powersource but it looks like too much for our needs, also pricey. Any alternatives to it?

Any serious advice will be highly appreciated. Please do not advice me to move, to order a Tesla Powerwall image - not available in Thailand yet, to install solar power (yes, lots of sun but no service available) or to buy a petrol generator  (too noisy to sleep, to expensive to run). The latter may be an option though if no recommendations originate here.

Look forward to your comments.

    Hi Leo,

Why don't you look into getting a car battery, a battery trickle charger and a couple 12 volt fans. The charger will replenish the battery while the power is available and the 12 volts can be safely handled without danger of a shock. I have seen 12 volt fans mounted in buses and trucks. The battery would not need to be new either. I don't know the resources available to you but most places have some sort of automobile salvage where used parts and batteries can be obtained.

The problem with using your present fans is that they must have 220 volts alternating current to operate. While there are devices to convert battery power to 220 volts a lot of power will be lost in the conversion. If you did decide you wanted to use a battery to generate the 220 V AC you will have to get a device called an inverter. A single fan like the ones you have would draw 6 to 8 Amps from the battery. Make sure you get an inverter that will produce current that will work with a motor as the cheaper ones may not.

If you have further questions I will try to help you.

    John
