Which EMI shielding material is better?

Former Member
Former Member over 9 years ago

Hello,

I have a little bit problem on choosing which EMI shielding material I should buy. I have found these 3 materials from element 14 and can give me some advice or suggestion which one to choose or any other recommendation?

I want the EMI shielding sheet to cover the electronic circuit board.

1 Wurth Elektronik  354002354002 Ferrite Sheet Shielding Square 120mm

2 Laird Technologies  WS-8463-NAWS-8463-NA Shielding Sheet RFI/EMI

3. 3M CN-3190 Sheet, Polyester, Flat, 70DB

Thank you.

Regards,

Wai Lynn

    Shielding

Many factors determine the true shielding effectiveness of a shielding tape, including

    Effectiveness

type and thickness of foil adhesive type,

    intimacy of contact, smoothness of

    application surface, strength and frequency

of the EMI signal, etc. However, using

standard tests and fixtures it is possible to determine a value for the attenuations. For

CN-3190 fabric tape, typical shielding effectiveness is in the range of 65dB to 70dB.

Before using this product, the user must evaluate it and determine if it is suitable for

    the intended application.

That's an interesting question, I myself, wants to know whats the difference, what to choose on this topic.
I will be looking for community members experience, advice or suggestions here.

How about a blog post on this topic from experienced members here?

    This isn't  blog post topic - it's  a multi-book type topic !

    Questions

1, are you trying to keep EMI in or out

    2, frequency range

    3, magnetic or electric field

    and so on.

I can give hints in certain areas, others will know about other things

so the best way to get help here is to ask specific questions, describing the problem in detail.

To become a general purpose expert -  you need to to study a lot and then get years of experience. Some of the best people I've met for broad range expertise work in EMC test where they have seen loads of problems worked on by a large number of different engineers.

Before considering any shielding materials have you ensured that your PCB and other elements are optimally designed?

Designing the PCB, accompanying case and the interface to the real world are the first steps for addressing both Signal Integrity and EM safety/compliance.

A fact that is too often overlooked is that PCBs are very often the most expensive item but most flexible component in a design.

If you think that PCB design is just a "Join the dots" exercise you might be in for a rude shock!

Actually, in the electronic circuit board, there are three signal generators and the three amplifiers to amplify the signals. Those three amplifiers are placed near laser diode mount and one of the amplifiers seems disturbing the laser background intensity. We suspect that it is because of EMI radiation and wanted to try experimenting using EMI shielding method to see whether it is because of EMI radiation or not.

Without pictures, schematics and some idea of operating levels and frequencies it isn't possible to help.
