analog audio amplifier for automotive head unit

Hi Team,

I'm working on an analog 4 channel audio amplifier with an output of 45-50 Watts per channel ) for car head unit.  The inputs would be from a 3.5mm jack of a mobile phone.  On researching on the internet I found the below ICs.  Are these the best for my requirement?  If not are there any best ICs that you would suggest or recommend?

TDA7560TDA7560http://www.st.com/content/ccc/resource/technical/document/datasheet/90/5c/1e/6b/dd/11/41/63/CD00001962.pdf/files/CD00001…

TDA7388:   http://www.st.com/content/ccc/resource/technical/document/datasheet/3d/05/8a/ee/2f/3d/45/f7/CD00179160.pdf/files/CD00179…

Toshiba's : TB2938HQ (https://toshiba.semicon-storage.com/ap-en/product/assp/audio-ic/detail.TB2938HQ.html )

Thanks,

Arun

    Hi Arun,

These are not really 40W, they are more like 20W, or less than that realistically, depending on amount of distortion you're willing to tolerate. At 20W there is 10% distortion by the way.

The higher 40W+ figures are for 2 ohm speakers, but your vehicle might have 4 ohm speakers. Plus, you need a massive heat sink.

You can't find a single IC to do what you want most likely. A better solution would use a DC-DC converter, and perhaps a Class D amp.

If you go to (say) ti.com you can view their automotive amplifier ICs and DC-DC converters.

    Thanks, Shabaz.

Sony is marketing their head units as 45, 50, 55 Watts (Media Receiver with USB | DSX-A100U | | Sony IN ). Are those absolutely deliver the rated power continuously or changes the power as per the battery voltage/speaker/TH?

Since Sony are so imprecise about the spec (and don't even mention the speaker impedance) I think you can assume the worst.

All amplifiers will deliver different amounts of power into different loads.

If you want good quality audio at 50W per channel then you really need an amplifier design which uses a step up DC-DC converter to take the battery voltage up from 12-15V to a more useful voltage - this is a lot more expensive and that's why it isn't done so often.

Are you interested in building something to save money, get good quality or just for the fun of it - the advice will be different in each case.

    MK

I'm interested in building that is of good quality yet simple to design with commercial interests in mind.
