RS-485 data logger

Hi. I need a device to record parameters from a MODBUS RS-485 capable sensor which has no inbuilt storage. It has to be standalone and allow me to download a file with every couple of weeks.

This sort of device does not seem common and I've found only one which is essentially a recording panel meter. Looking for something easy to configure to read the sensor parameters, and not too expensive. Are there any devices out there? Thanks

Well the Siemens IOT2020/IOT2040 are pretty new, the 2040 already has serial RS485 ports. If you google them you will find a lot of videos I have prepared on using them etc (Many on my youtube channel…

When you say stand alone, do you mean battery operated or simply not connected to a network ?

If it is simply not connected to a network then an Arduino, Raspberry PI or something like that would work with a RS485 module. If your using the PI then you can use node red and make it a little more user friendly and even have a local WIFI for access.

If you need to have it industrial strength then an Industrial Shields unit or a Siemens IOT2020 would do the trick, both would require a 24V supply but either can do the job for you with relative ease. The Industrial Shields have RS485 included and are Arduino Based so easy to program (You did not say how much data needs recording)

The IOT2020 would need an Arduino RS485 Shield but as it is running Linux it can store the data on the SD Card.

    Hope this helps

Thanks Peter. By standalone I mean not on a network. I want to read two parameters from an ultrasonic flow meter and store these for a matter of weeks perhaps. It's slow-changing data so not much to store.

The two possibilities you mention above have given me something to look at and I'm interested in finding out more, but in this case I really need to get something off the shelf and ready to go. I have looked at a Sifam Tinsley N30B logger which should do what I need, but that's about all I've seen. I was sort of wondering what other devices are out there that could work as a master device to record only, but I don't need to control anything.

    Thanks

I am actually running a contest on hackster.io where you could win an IOT2020 and then use it to win 4800USD worth of lab kit... image

Peter, this all looks very interesting and I'm keen to get stuck in and play. Seems I asked this question in the right place.

    Thanks again
