PR261-1 Snapped off on installation

Just building a test jig and soldered the wires to 17 of the PR261-1PR261-1 using heat sinks to prevent melting the mounting block

Spring Loaded Contacts & Probes (54)

When I inverted the mounting block to fit it into the holder 4 of the bodies snapped off.

There appears to be a weakness in the body where there is a depression around the circumference.

Has this happened to anyone else using these spring loaded contacts?

Hi Lee,
I have been thinking about how the pins failed for your application. While I do not have any experience with these pins it seems to me that you could repair them by taking a small section of brass tubing and use it as a sheath to couple the two broken pieces. It it were soldered in place it would make a good repair. Since you know where the weakness is now you could preemptively put sheaths on the pins. Another help might be to find a way to put strain reliefs on the wires before they attach to the pins. By the way I was impressed with the beautiful connector that you made and the excellent solder job.

That's strange - I would have thought they were more robust than that.

Perhaps contact the manufacturer to see what they think? From the pdf datasheet:

Hi John
Thank you for the idea but I have now replaced them with physically larger spring terminals and that has worked out OK. Now I have to make up a holder to position the boards over and also push it into contact with the 'nails'.
These (larger) terminals are only rated at 1amp - so we will see how we go when testing begins.
