Career advice Types of Engineers

Koomoa

I am looking advice on going into an engineering career. I am currently in the navy as an aviation electrician, but I really love working on computers/electronics also building & designing things, and working with my hands. But my skills are not that great. I was hoping to find out about different engineering career fields what type of degree I should try and go for? Any type of advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Kelii,

That's actually quite a difficult one to answer, as Engineering is an incredibly broad subject.  You could go for a wide subject like Electrical Engineering or Electronic Engineering (or even Electrical & Electronic Engineering image ) and specialise during the course, as I suspect your last year will have specific options.  You will also need to research the universities themselves, check out their ties to industry - and make sure the course is accredited, so you come out with a BEng, rather than a BA.

Send for lots of prospectuses from different universities, or have a look at them in your local careers library.  No University course is the same as any other - there is no set "national curriculum" at that level, each can be a bit different, so a degree with the same name can have slightly different content or bias.  Also, many of them could either offer a year's foundation course to get you up to the right level if you need it, or maybe just an extra course if you just need a little more.

Finally, consider the finances - unless your family is very well off, you will want to consider what it actually costs to go to each university.  Do you want to live on or off campus? Personally, I went to Brunel over one or two other choices, because at the time they guraranteed on-campus rooms for all 1st yr students - the last thing I wanted to face was trying to house-share with a load of strangers!  Is it a long way from home - will the costs to visit your parents be expensive (or you may want to be as far away as possible!).  Do they have sports that you really want to do?

Whatever you decide, I wish you the best of luck in advancing your career!  It's great to hear of people that do actually want to do engineering!  Any questions, I'm happy to try and help - although my university time was 20 years ago image!
