TFT LCD Display for composite video

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

Hello All,

I am working on a project I would like to use a TFT LCD Display (hopefully with a touch screen). My video requirement though is that the video feed is a composite video. I can not seem to find a TFT display that has a driver circuit attacted that can accept composite video. Can somebody point me in the right direction of either a driver circuit/display combination or a driver circuit that I can purchase that can will do the trick?

I would build the circuit myself, but I can't seem to find an IC to do the video slicing that is a through hole. I don't have a solder reflow oven yet for surface mount components.

    Joe,

There are plenty of driver boards with a slew of inputs. A quick google search found this page: http://www.inlcd.com/?page=lcd-controller-boards

    See the bottom 3 results.

What is the application? Can a third party board fit in your design? Consider building the complete interface yourself. You would save cost and complexity over these all-in-one driver boards.

I saw those, but they are way to big and overkill for my needs.

The application I am working on is actually getting an Atari to run first on a TFT display then on a computer monitor. A coworker does not think it is possible. I intend to prove him wrong. The touch screen is For a boss key/on screen controlls for a portable unit I am dreaming up.

My preference would be to build my own controller, but I do no have the equipment for surface mount devices. The only IC's I can locate are SMD.

Not to rain on the parade, but Ben Heck has already adapted the Atari to a small LCD. A few others joined in on the fun too, and it looks like this guy had your idea too.

I have also seen Atari video output to VGA adapters on Ebay and other places.

I'm afraid that a repurposing of a TV/DVD unit would be the most sensible

In the UK CPC (Farnel's white van man Arm) had Casio units in stock and occaionally on special offer + loads of composite intout monitors from £30++++++.

The alternative to buying a new unit is finding something that looks right from a thrift/Charity shop and do ing the Ben Heck hack thing !!

    Cabe,

You are not raining on my parade. And no offence to Ben Heck, but just because he did something does not mean that I should not take the opportunity to learn something and grow in my chosen hobby.

I mean no offence, but just because somebody else did something does not mean anything. If that were an excuse we would be riding on tires made of rock because somebody else already created a wheel so we all should leave it alone.

    Joe,

By all means, try it. I gave the links so you could have some reference and see how they overcame the video translation problem.

Have fun, and post what you create on element14.
