Automatic chicken coop door.

Hey everyone,

Im building an automatic chicken coop door and I have a few questions.

 

1. I'm using a Emerson Gearmaster motor for the operation.

   a.  115 volts

   b.  60hz

   c.  2.4 amps

   d.  40 rpm

   e.  5min time rating.

   f.  there are limit switches in both directions already in place and adjusted.

 

2.  I plan on using one timer or optic sensor to operate the door.

 

3.  It will open in the AM at dawn and close in the PM at dusk.

 

4.  I am really green when it comes to electronics.

 

My question is...

How do I switch this operation?  Do I use a DPDT relay?  And if I do, what type/specs?

    Hi Dave,

     

    I think that you should look for a microcontroller version of the "switch" design, this way when you will need to modify your design (to slow the end portion of the closing, to add some other sensors or override controls, or something else) it will be easy.

    Take a simple development kit like the 5$ TI Launchpad or something that you find more familiar to you and build some of the features you need now, later you'll add some others ... and soon you will have a final product.
