17in monitor configuation

Hi, I am a newbie with the Raspberry Pi computer

I got the Plug n play kit from CPC at Christmas, it works fine on my 26in TV using the RGB connection with an HDMI to RGB converter.

The trouble starts, when I tried to connect to an old 17in monitor. The icons are off screen left and the raspberry in the centre of the screen is vertically elongated. Can I change the display

settings whilst connected to the TV, to suit the 17in monitor. Can you please help.

You could try a hdmi to vga converter from the elment store. Also are there any controls on the back of the monitor you can adjust? (horz/syn) And you may want to try the monitor on another pc to see if it's the same problem. Couple things to look at...later.
