Atmega328-p

I'm currently trying to set up three atmega 328-p microcontrollers (the IC's, not the arduino boards) in a Master/Slave/Slave configureation. I want to have the two slaves each take the responsibility of certain actions and follow directions from the master, or send data back to the master so all i have to do is monitor the master's output. I was thinking of connecting them via I2C, or SPI. Is there a better way to do this? or can someone help me with my current idea?

if you use the x meag with the u designation chips they have an onboard usb controller. such as the
ATXMEGA256A3U-MH
they were developed to remove the need for a second USB host chip.

well i'm not using x mega chips, i'm using just ATmega328-p's which are found in arduino. thanks anyway.
