To Select energy metering IC for single-phase

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

I need to measure and monitor following things with power management IC and want to read their register values using micro-controller via SPI or I2C.

for single phase system. for 5 amp.

1 active power

2 reactive power

3 apparent power

4 power factor

I have analyze following products for above needs.

1 ADE7753 (analog devices)

2 ADE7953 (analog devices)

I kindly request can you suggest most suitable and simple IC product to measure above needs.

and also suitable current transformer and the voltage transformer for analog inputs to the IC.

Thanks

Your question sounds rather as if you are expecting other people to do your work for you - have you read all the material supporting the two Analog Devices chips on their website - there is a lot of it and it's quite helpful. Have you googled and loked in Farnell, Digikey, RS etc for current transformers ? If you want to understand the subject in more depth look at other manufacturers data sheets and app notes for power management or measurement.

If you have done these things and there are specific points that you don't understand please post again and I (and others) will be able to help you more.

    Thanks lot for the reply.

I have analyze more products from various venders as follows.

    1 Maxim max71020

    2 Microchip 3905A

    3 analog devices ADE7757 ,

    4 analog devices ADE7763ARSZADE7763ARSZ ,

    5 analog devices ADE7953

    6 analog devices ADE7753ARSZ.ADE7753ARSZ.

active, reactive, apparent power can measure from 5,6.

active , apparent power can measure from 4

5 has all capabilities but it is in FLCSP package type.

    5 is not in stock

Above products are selected with cost consideration and practical availability.

According to these option I can monitor V and I , RMS values from CT and PT. To only calculate active power get the help of Microchip 3905A with active power pulse count.

Then can calculate apparent power and active power and from that values can obtain power factor and reactive power from mathematical calculations.

As a potential transformer I would like to use normal AC transformer.

    For CT| http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/current-transformers/7295505/

    can select 5 -100 A range.

So I would like to know this process is suitable for above mentioned needs.

    Thanks

ADE7953 is in stock at Farnell 1897115. The package is perfectly hand solderable if you have some experience and make a hole in the pcb about 2.5mm diameter or for a prototype you could just not solder it at all.

Farnell do  a range of current transformers as well.

    What micro-controller a re you using ?
