A nice project will be this: a TV remote control driven by speech. You can program single key functions using your standard remote control, making your device able to "learn" the various IR led bursts sequences for main controls ; after that, you can add to the project the analogue part for speech sensing and basic recognition just for simple commands like "turn on", "turn off", "pump up the volume", etcetera. Every recognized speech command will be associated with the correspondant IR code, then sent to the TV. This smart device can be positioned near the speaker and far from the TV, just to bettering the audio features.

    Hope this helps...Ciao

Similar to Emilio's suggestion would be for a bed-ridden hospital patient communication system.  Using a simple, preferably voice-activated, user interface, allow patients with extended hospital care or even those in retirement home care, establish on-demand voice or video sessions with friends and family using portable (cell or tablet) or traditional PCs (lap tops or desk sets).

For many of these people advanced technology would seem way beyond their capability or either operate or understand.  So a simplistic, voice-driven user interface would be a great way to reduce their loneliness and anxieties.
Some of the basic needs would include:

    ·         - An Activity command set (Listen/Ignore/Find/Call/Show/Louder-Softer /Quit-Bye/Hold-Mute/etc.)

    ·        -  A Directory command set (New-Add(name/address/phone number/email/link to/notes /photo/etc.)/Remove/Update/Search/Merge/Sort By)

    ·        -  Turn On/Turn Off

In a basic format this could be an add-on box, using a display (possibly a TV), a microphone and an internet connection.

A more advanced version might be integrated into a cable TV or with a web browser or a data store, so that the user could invoke capture/save/share/insert functions.  Imagine someone wanting to save and share the latest photos of family members or events seen on TV or internet clippings or notes from doctor visits.

Tied into an email system others might be able to send in directory information (e.g. eCards) which the user could merge into their directory with a simple command (no Cut & Paste).

I’ve heard requests for support like this from several friends of both my mother and father as they made their ways through their final years in hospitals and rest homes.  It has both high demand (especially as the baby boomers head to their final days) and a novelty not yet addressed.  Could be a lot of money, not to mention a very nice service to many people’s Moms and Dads, available to the right inventor.
