Capacitor Help !!!

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

Hello all. Was sent here from Farnell. I seem to be having a problem finding out what part number I am working with on this capacitor. I can't find a part number and I need to replace this thing. Only markings on the capacitor are on the top. They are 3R 470 ELA . This capacitor is on an Hewlett Packard laptop motherboard. If there is anyone out there that can tell me the technical aspects of this thing so I can order one from wherever, it would be greatly appreciated. image

I couldn't find much on it, but we should be able to reason a few specifications.

    • 470 uF is large, and likely means this capacitor is involved in a power supply circuit. Luckily for us this means the tolerance is probably loose, so when you order a new one the tolerance shouldn't matter.
    • If it's on a motherboard, then the maximum voltage in would be 12V. Now, there could be a booster somewhere on the board, but the investigation leading to the 25V tolerance is likely correct since the computer power supply doesn't supply more than 12 Volts.
    • Bulging electrolytic capacitors are a problem as equipment ages, so it's not surprising. As Peter mentioned you should peruse the board for more bad capacitors as there are likely more.

I have michaelwylie and there are no other's. This laptop belonged to my nephews daughter and she spilled a drink on it. They sent it in to have it analyzed

and the techs told them they needed to replace the M/B. 9 times out of 10 you can save that cost but replacing the damaged capacitors. But this by far was

the only one noticed that had any bulge what so ever.  Grant it, I know there can be further problems other than the capacitor, but step at a time and

go cheap at first. If need be I will have to break down and put in the cost for a whole new board. image
