Miniature WiFi Adapter won't detected by Raspberry Pi

Hi guys,

I've been meaning to ask, last week i've purchased new wifi adapter from element14 which is this one in particular here. I've try to use the wifi adapter with my both

Raspberry Pi B model and also B+ model. Both won't detect my wifi adapter. I've been following this particular post to troubleshoot my issue Raspberry Pi • View topic - WiFi Issues ? Start here !

What is weird is I can even detect the device itself when I'm running lsusb. Below is the information that will display when I run lsusb on my raspbian device connected with the wifi adapter.

I have also try connect and run the wifi adapter it on my Windows laptop which run fine by plug-in-play and I manage to connect to my home network. I have another Wifi adapter (not the one I buy from element14) that working fine when I try on my Raspberry Pi model.

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0424:9512 Standard Microsystems Corp.

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0424:ec00 Standard Microsystems Corp.

I have also try to install the driver and anything else but I think that won't matter since I believe if you can't detect the device through lsusb, the driver wont matter to install. Right now I just ssh to my pi using ethernet cable. I'm meaning to make it work using Wifi instead of Ethernet cable.

Could anyone enlight and tell me about my situation .

I've managed to make it work right now and it was detected by the lsusb command. In response to my question that I've post, I think it is obligate for me share what I've tested actually. By the way I follow…

According to the adafruit site, it should be supported out-of-box on RPI.

Since you've established that it doesn't work with two RPI devices yet it does work with your laptop, I'm wondering if it is perhaps a borderline power supply related issue, although even that seems unlikely to be honest.

Personally I don't like to use these types of very small adapters, I find the slightly larger ones have better range for home use. The Wi-Pi version has good range and does work out-of-box for me - maybe not the answer you want to hear I know : (

Ya, at first I thought it will work out-of-box at first.

It is quite weird it wont detect. I have also try run sudo dmesg -C first then I try to plug it, and dmesg again to get any output but sadly nothing outputs also.

I try above steps for my usb pendrive, it works quite fine. Hmm, guess I'll try other way first. Thanks by the way image

for the last advice where in the post said as I've quote

"- For devices that otherwise refuse to work, the "nuclear option" is to put dwc_otg.speed=1 into /boot/cmdline.txt. This will drop the bus speed to 12Mbps - USB1.1 speeds. Ethernet will be extremely slow with this option enabled."

I've simply put this line in the cmdline.txt there and reboot then voila! It's detected. I'm not sure why the need to reduce bus speed. I figure because this is easy way for you to reduce power use by the wifi adapter rather than going for powered hub.

    Hi Ahmad,

Thanks for the information. I wonder if it worked fine in earlier RPI software images, I suppose it could be a bug introduced at some stage : (

It sounds like the nuclear option they refer to is likely not really an acceptable option to most people, to drop to USB 1.1. speed : (
