Software Stack Vs Operating Systems

What is the difference between software stack and an operating system. How can I distinguish between the two and on what basis in industry they are distinguishable? Do provide practical examples or any real world application of the above scenario. This question always gives me creepy feeling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    A software stack is typically used to refer to the complete set of software used for an application, it will include the OS

     

     

     

    An example would  be Windows Server, MS SQL Server, IIS, Biztalk  (A Microsoft Based Stack)

     

    Or

     

    Redhat Linux, Apache Web Server, IBM IIB (WebSphere Message Broker), IBM MQ, rSyslog, Tivoli Monitoring (An IBM Based Stack)

     

     

     

    These are not necessarily a complete stack but examples of what makes up a software stack

     

     

     

    The OS is simply one part of the stack
