Hi ther!

So, i just watched the movie The Imitation Game, and as a electronic hobbyies, i said to my self "why not build a awsome mechanical codebreaker?!"

Example of a code breaker: Bombe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So my questions to the experts is:

How does a "mecanincal" codebreaker work?

How does the motors/electro magnets in a codebreaker work?

Enyone know of eny blueprints? image

How did they controll the codebreaker, as they didnt have eny prossesing power to controll it i think.

Thanks for eny help! ;D

Hi magnus2112 It's a fantastic film. After some extensive research, I found a document that seems to describe the process pretty well. https://www.nsa.gov/about/_files/cryptologic_heritage/publications…

Funny you should ask. I have done extensive research on first the Enigma used by the Germans during WW2 as well as the code breaking of first the Polish and then the British. The Polish actually built the first "Bomba" and turned over the ideas to of course to the British which included Alan Turing right before the fall of Poland after Germans attacked in September 1, 1939. That may be where the British got the term Bombe! The parts were very numerous therefore building one required a lot of money. I plan on writing some of this later if I get interest from this community. The British actually produced "Colossus" which was the first programmable computer using tubes after 1943 with help of Alan Turing.

    Cheers,

    Clem

PS. They controlled the machine by plugs and much later paper tape.
