So, i was wondering, how does facebook track your location without using a gps?

On facebook you have the option to send your location to a friend, using the mobile network, and i was wondering:

Enyone know how it works?

Do enyone know how i can apply this principal to my own code? image

Thanks for eny help image

I would imagine they use a number of different approaches.

One such example is geo-location based on public IP address. An example can be found here: IP Address Details - ipinfo.io

This is all built right into the Browsers of any modern computer (GPS or not), it will use WIFI, Public IP etc as Paul stated and is very easy to use given the right client side (Java typically) scripts.

Ofcorsce i see what you mean by locating by a ip adress, but in Norway(maybe this is difrent inn other countries) you cant locate a pearson by the ip, becouse its illigal to give out information of the location and the owner of the ip. But how i think they are tracking, is using the cellphone towers and calculate the location:

If you mean facebook on a mobile phone, I can see what you mean. In the US we have GPS for anyone calling in on 911 or emergency call. They can locate you no matter what since every phone has GPS even when you choose not to show.image
