RAM card/stick for PC's, DIY or no?

Ive been curious about getting more hands on in my PC building, everything in my PC ive installed myself, from the ground up and i am curious if i can take it one step further and build ALL the parts myself instead of just breaking down and shelling out the cash to pay for larger RAM cards,  full motherboards, sound cards, and the like. (i have no illusions to the fact that i can build a CPU and such, but a graphics card i was curious about as well)

    Most high-performance ICs nowadays are dense surface-mount packages like fine-pitch ball-grid arrays (BGAs).  These are very hard to assemble and generally require special equipment and know-how.  You probably won't save any money trying to DIY with these kinds of parts.   I think you're better off buying a single-board computer (SBC) and modules that have the components you want to play with, and then wire them together with your own PC board and/or wire-wrap.

     

    You actually can build a CPU from basic logic using an FPGA development board.  You can either implement an existing instruction set or design your own.  It won't have the performance of a commercial CPU, but it will be a lot more fun and educational.
