Sony Home Theatre System DAV-SR2 SMPS power supply electrolytic capacitor replacement.

Brant

Hi guys!

The old KMF/LXZ/Nichicon electrolytic capacitors fitted in the SMPS power supply are in need of replacement, however these KMF/LXZ types are no longer available.
I am having terrible trouble deciphering the (Ripple Currant / ESR / Impedance) specifications that seem so important with SMPS power supplies to avoid mismatched components that could perhaps cause ringing or other problems with mismatched components.

I cant seem to find any of the new capacitors with the same Impedance or ripple currant specs, would installing a capacitor with a lower "Ripple Currant" rating as all the new capacitors seem to be, damage the power supply if installed?
The many online suppliers Min-Max specifications are very confusing.

Are there any specific types of electrolytic capacitors you would recommend for an SMPS power supply?

Thank you in advance.
Kind regards

Brant

If the replacement part has a lower ripple current rating it might be acceptable but you would need to know the actual ripple current in service.

To get good advice you need to provide more information.

Post a schematic of the power supply and the full part numbers of the original parts and it will be possible to advise you.

    Hi Michael

As far as I am aware the schematic of the power supply for the DVD-SR2 part No: 1-469-839-12 is not available "I have tried a search" but I have not as yet written to Sony.
I don't think they would send me one but I'll give it a go, fingers crossed.

    Thank you for your reply.

    Brant.

Generally speaking, I would ordinarily opt for equivalent or higher ripple current rating just to avoid a case of the capacitor potentially being over-stressed and prematurely failing. Mechanical fit is something else to consider as well.

That being said, chances of ringing seem to be quite low in practice - I've recapped many supplies and motherboards without paying that much attention and have generally gotten away with it, as the engineering "margin" in the original design may have been great enough. After all, many of these products would have spent many years with marginal capacitors before they failed to operate - so I don't think it's as big of an issue as not having enough low-ESR capacitance available.

Hello, what is the value of the capacitor you're looking for? How many Farads, how many volts?
