Two rock amplifier construction, request for help.

AntonioGonzaga
AntonioGonzaga over 1 year ago

I intend to start a project to build an amplifier, preferably a replica of a TWO ROCK amplifier.

However, I don't have technical plans and I don't have enough knowledge to perform this task.

For this reason, I ask for your help to succeed in this goal.

I need a list of tools to be able to work with dignity.

the project in plans.

A list of parts to purchase.

All suggestions and knowledge from the community are welcome.

With this project I intend to acquire knowledge to improve the circuit, I need links in order to acquire knowledge to carry out this project.

I am a mechanical engineer with a great interest in learning about electronics.

The sound of a guitar amplifier (we'll ignore the speakers although they are just as important ) is dependent the ciruit, parts and construction.

Valve amplifiers are very dependent on the valves and the output transformer.

It is unlikely that you will be able to get the same parts as were used in the original.

It will be very, very hard to make a new amplifier that sounds the same -  Two Rock have been at it for a while !

And it is far too ambitious for a first project !

To get the knowledge and skill to improve the design will require significant effort - think in terms of 10,000 hours minimum !

Start small - do you know how valves work - have you built a valve amplifier ?

You can make a start on learning by buying a cheap single valve kit - it'll be pretty rubbish as an amplifier but that isn't the point.

    Hello Michael,

Thank you very much for your answer, receiving words of warning in order to put my feet on the ground is very important for anyone who wants to start, so I appreciate your warning.

I would like to know if you recommend any KIT for me to do my first project, I would also like to know if you can tell me which tools I need to buy to start my first project.

I am very skilled with my hands, I like to learn, I have knowledge of mathematics and physics, and I am really willing to learn.

Any help from you, such as links to start my goal of getting started in electronic construction, I really appreciate your help as I don't know anyone in this area, and for that reason I signed up for this forum. thank you very much.

This article gives some very detailed instructions about building a kit and might be helpful.

Thank you very much for your work in finding a solution that best suits my knowledge.

I've actually been looking at this STEWMAC website, they are professionals in these KITS (LEGOS) they are spectacular because they are projects that I can see every detail, (I've even downloaded the instructions for two of these amplifiers) they are really expensive, and in addition very difficult shipping to Portugal (postage and customs) must actually be even more expensive.

I will try to find it here in Europe, Germany or even in China to see what exists in this area, in order to try to reduce the price. I would like to do something more difficult and challenging, something where I have to build the chassis, make the box, try to find the material and finally adapt the material if I don't find the material completely the same, understand the circuit in its entirety, in addition to have a lower price, let's see what I can find, thank you very much and best wishes.

AntonioGonzaga I would caution against looking for "more difficult and challenging".  Relaxed  Go for simple and easy.  "More difficult and challenging" will find you anyway.  No job is as easy as it looks.  On the off chance that everything does go well, you will have a functional reference to move to the more complicated project - and be able to still use your amplifier when you need a break from the challenge.

While not technical let me offer the following sage advice, "ONE ROCK amplifier in the hand is better than TWO ROCK amplifier in the bush."  Wink

I read your post when it first came out and walked away without responding. Your request was like asking how to boil-the-ocean and not how do I boil-a-cup of water. I tend to avoid responding to the boil-the-ocean type posts.

On a second visit I read some of the responses and mellowed. If I asked you to build me a turbine, I suspect you would need responses to a number of queries before making a suggestion. If my build a turbine question included a specific type, I don't think the query response process would be much different. The interaction is necessary to flush out requirements.

You want to build (what some would consider) the gold standard of amplifiers. So my question what are your requirements?

I've been a member of the site for a number of years. Your post seemed familiar, so I did a search of E14 for "guitar amplifiers". I recall following this post.  RE: New challenge for 2022 - Hiwatt DR103 Clone amplifier. I grew up with tubes so it had some affinity. Some of the sites brighter minds offered suggestions. It was a big undertaking.

What is your experience with electronics? Narrow that down to audio electronics? Even with a build kit you are going to need some support from the first two questions.

Here is a link to a boil-a-cup audio project. The cost is low (from my perspective). I believe if you successfully complete the project you will have answered many of the questions you don't even know you have to ask, before starting the larger project. I believe with the smaller project you will acquire knowledge to improve the TWO ROCK amplifier project.

Thank you very much for you help.

In fact, when I prepared the question I had no idea of the complexity of the task I was being asked to do, with your help and little tips I will learn and build my own knowledge over time.
