Element14 2.4" screen doesn't work

I made the mistake of buying this screen and it doesn't work out of the box. The instructions posted on the manufacturer's website (4DPi-24-HAT) are simple enough to follow and i followed them religiously.

Upon boot-up, the pi freezes and i have to reinstall the software again. I tried both noobs and jessie.

I bought the screen thinking that it would help me the boot activity in case something goes wrong. Anyway, that's another story. for now, the pi freezes and nothing comes up on the screen.

Anyone can help please? i already created a ticket on their support site, but haven't heard anything from them.

Thanks

Saw an app-note for code examples for the switches, if that helps. http://www.farnell.com/datasheets/1943798.pdf

This display won't work simply by plugging it in, you need either an HDMI screen attached or the official PI LCD display for that,

you will need to load drivers with apt-get install ...... etc before this display will work, i don't know which of the top of my head but the instructions should tell you

Until the display drivers are loaded, the HDMI should still continue to work and allow you to review what your doing each step of the way

If you got this to help with boot issues then sorry but you are way off the mark, the best for that is the HDMI port or the 7" LCD display.

Noobs is not an operating system, it is actually just a boot loader and helper to install the real OS. so in your case you probably loaded Debian Jessie both times, one through the use of NOOBS, one directly.

    Thanks

    hi

after sending the manufacturer a second email, they got back to me. The problem was editing that rc.local file. It was unnecessary and also what caused the pi to freeze on boot.

    Hi Peter,

Yes. All is good and the screen is working.

I did want to know however, whether the buttons below the screen are functional or not.

and i wanted to know if it was possible to disable the screen if i wanted and temporarily use the external HDMI screen, they did not get back to me on that.

They are probably connected to GPIO lines or a GPIO expander chip, either way you should be able to use them with a little coding
