Hi all I want to buy  LCMXO2280C-B-EVNLCMXO2280C-B-EVN MachXO breakout board evaluation kit http://in.element14.com/lattice-semiconductor/lcmxo2280c-b-evn/board-breakout-machxo-2280/dp/2253065) but its description is confusing,

In the main title it is written

LATTICE SEMICONDUCTOR  LCMXO2280C-B-EVNLCMXO2280C-B-EVN MachXO Breakout Board for LCMXO22800C-FTN256C FPGA

but further written,

Product Information

Core Architecture:CPLD
Core Sub-Architecture: CPLD
i am new to this device family pls tell me MachXO2280, LCMXO22800C-FTN256C is FPGA or CPLD ? so that i can order right board according to my needs.
thanks in advance
pls reply soon.......
thanks

If a device is called FPGA or CPLD has nothing (or very little) to do with what it can actually do.

So - if you can explain what you want to do with it I can tell you if it is  a good choice or not.

The MachX parts are usually considered to be on the borderline between CPLD and FPGA.

The board you are looking at is based on the MACHX0 part, Lattice have two later families of similar parts, MACHX02 and MACHX03 - it seems a little unwise to start a new project on the oldest family unless there is a  very good reason to do so.

But asking for advice on chips is like a visit to the doctor - you don't go in to the surgery and say; "Should I take Paracetamol or have my leg amputated ?", first you tell the doctor what the problem is.

Hi great thanks for your reply, actually I have assigned Research project entitled "Design of Smart Microprocessor Using FPGA"

I cannot change my project title now, so I require only FPGA device.

    thanks

Well, this is going to be quite a challenge for you !!

If you want to stay with Lattice you could buy a Brevia development board  (Farnell don't sell them any more but Mouser do) board which carries an XP2 family part which is definitely an FPGA - not a huge one - only 5k LUTs but big enough for processor. The FPGA has some on chip RAM and there is more on the dev baord.

You can get much cheaper little boards direct from China with Altera FPGAs on but you don't get good docs or the support chips. The Lattice one is a safer choice.

You could go with a processor from Lattice's iCE family - but I don't recommend it - the development tools are no as good and the architecture of the actual chips is less sophisticated and can get you into problems that you won't see with  other FPGAs - if you care about low power and low cost in volume the iCE parts are unbeatable.

It's more usual to choose an FPGA by defining what you need it to do but in your case I think you should stick with a simple low end part.
