A Japanese town deployed two robot wolves, called the Monster Wolf, to scare away wild bears that have been roaming around neighborhoods and terrorizing residents. Takikawa purchased the animatronic wolves in September with no reports of bear encounters since then. Overall, 157 people were attacked by bears in 2019.
According to NHK, bear sightings in the country hit a five-year high, with most of them occurring in western and northern Japan. Dozens of attacks have been reported so far in 2020, two of which were fatal, leading the government to hold an emergency meeting last month to address this issue.
Conservatives say the recent bear attacks are likely due to a shortage of acorns in the wilderness, causing the bears to venture closer to cities. They become more active and dangerous as they search for food before hibernating in late November. Deforestation and habitat loss have also contributed to the problem.
These Monster Wolf robots are mounted on a stationary pole and consist of a shaggy body, four legs, a blond mane, and glowing red eyes. Once the motion detectors are activated, the robots move their heads, beam flashy lights, and emit 60 sounds, which range from howling to machinery noises. About 70 units have been sold by Ohta Seiki since 2018. They have been installed in various locations in Japan to protect neighbors and crops from wild animals. Seems like an awesome Halloween project to reproduce.
