Have you ever taken your fish for a walk? Ever wanted to? Well, you may be able to soon! MA Corporation, a Japanese company, is currently developing a Katsugyo Bag for carrying live fish from one destination to the other. The prototype isn’t designed to keep ornamental fish comfortable. Instead, the fish are kept fresh and alive for consumption. The ultimate goal is to provide an efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to water-filled plastic bags. Prices and availability for this product have yet to be disclosed.
The Katsugyo Bag’s design consists of a long cylindrical tube with feet placed at each end to keep it from rolling off after setting it on a flat surface. It’s also equipped with a handle and gauge that measures the water’s oxygen saturation level. Tests are still being performed on the bag with different edible fish. Results are documented and posted on the Instagram page.
One advantage of the Katsugyo Bag is that it only requires minimum water to keep the fish alive, effectively reducing the carrying weight. A DC power inlet, which charges a ¼” fitting for an oxygen input, is fitted on the rear chamber. This bag has two body sections that allow the user to remove the aquarium, store the fish, and put it back together before restoring power.

The product has gone through some modifications ever since it first appeared on Instagram in October 2020. From there, the developers added a feeding tube and an oxygen gauge. It could still go through some upgrades while it’s tested with other types of fish. For instance, mackerel tend to swim around a lot, making it more difficult to transport them. The team says they plan on making adjustments to their bag to accommodate that problem.
It also has the potential to be successfully commercialized in Japan and abroad. Comments on the Instagram page have already expressed interest in this device by asking about costs and where they can purchase one. Even though the fish transporting vessel could be utilized as a way for owners to walk their pet, it’s still aimed toward sashimi fans who want their meal to stay fresh. A bit morbid, in any case.
