What are the main kinds of MRO engineers?

Hey Everyone.

I'm doing some research into Maintenance, Repair & Operations (MRO), and want to define the main "types" of MRO techs. For example--
* The close-to-retirement MRO who isn't looking for innovative solutions, just a reliable way to easily get the parts he needs when things break

* The head of procurement for an aviation company who's savvy on all the latest advances in preventive, predictive maintenance and the Industrial Internet of Things

* The factory ops guy who is under increasing pressure to keep things running smoothly despite the fact his company has slashed budget for preventive maintenance

* The MRO responsible for keeping the mine, oil rig, or other extraction equipment running smoothly. He can't afford to cut corners as lives are on the line. The parts he buys need to be a perfect fit.

* The young MRO tech who is terrified that he didn't really learn all the stuff in school he should have, but now finds himself in a position of considerable authority and needs a way to quickly ramp up-to-speed

You get the idea.

The examples above may be totally wrong, but they map onto some of the people I've met so far.

What do you think? Are there some reliable "types" of MRO techs that you've come across?

Thanks so much for sharing your insight! It feels great to be back in the element14 community!

    Hi Shabaz.

Thanks! It has been a while. After thinking about this assignment, it suddenly dawned on me that the element14 community was the perfect place to pose this question! Everything is going well. I'm still out in LA but have an opportunity in the midwest that is very exciting.

    How have you been?

I'm good thanks! Glad to hear things are going well for you!

I've not heard the MRO term in the UK, maybe it goes by a different name here.

Sounds like what might be termed a technician role here possibly, I'm not sure unfortunately.

    Hi Shabaz.

MRO refers to Maintenance, Repair, and Operations. These are the techs responsible for keeping aircraft, mines, oil rigs, factory floors, and other intense heavy machinery running. They work close with procurement to make sure they can find products like--

    • Bearings
    • Bushings
    • Gear & Gear Racks
    • Idlers & Tensioners
    • Pulleys & Sheaves
    • Sprockets
    • Electric Motors
    • Seals
    • Transmission Belts

--and more. MRO's today are under a ton of pressure because they're the guys responsible for keeping downtime to a minimum. At the same, time, however, their companies are slashing preventive maintenance budgets. So the systems that might have predicted that a belt (say) was going to fail, aren't there. Everyone only finds out that the part failed when the assembly line grinds to a halt, and that means millions of dollars lost for the company. At that point, the MRO has to quickly identify what went wrong, and scramble to find the right replacement part.

Premier Farnell/Avnet supports the MRO community, as do other distributors like RS.

I'm working on a project for one of my clients that involves taking a deep dive into the MRO market & identifying the main types of customers out there. Figured the e14 community would be the perfect place to do that-- and it would give me an excuse to reconnect with my old pals here!

    Best,
    Sagar
