There's plenty more to say about the love affair between IoT and the element14 community. There's no surprise why. The Internet of Things appears to be on track to revolutionize the way we work and the way we play. Think of all the ways that IoT crosses your personal and work lives, and you'll know what I mean.image

 

So, when I was given 7 Amber Pi Design Kits to hand out to community members, what better way to use them than to craft a giveaway for an IoT at Work & Play Contest. (BTW I decided to give a Raspberry Pi 3 along with the Amber Pis.)

 

So, what do you need to do to win one of these 7 kits?

 

Think about how you use IoT at work. Then, think about how IoT is part of how you play (relax, have fun, etc.) after work and go home, go to the coffee shop, go to the gym, or wherever you like to hang out.

 

I'm interested in getting proposals for IoT projects that can be used at WORK or while you PLAY after work. You can put your proposals in the COMMENTS section on this page. I'll wait two weeks and read all the proposals and select the 7 best proposals to send a FREE Amber Pi-Raspberry Pi Kit.image

 

In your proposal, be creative

 

Think up an idea of how to use IoT at Work & Play in an interesting way. Remember, IoT is changing our lives. I'm interested in seeing how it can change the way you work and the way you play.

 

Your proposal does not have to be huge.

 

No need to write a book. No more than a few paragraphs. But be specific enough so I can visualize what you plan to build. After I choose the winners, I'll ship you the kits. I'd like to see projects in a month or two.

    Amber PI Kiosk

    Allow pre-registered event attendees to complete the check-in process.  Many conventions centers limit the use of WIFI, and have poor cell phone coverage near their meeting rooms, therefore the Amber Pi Design Kit's bidirectional wireless bridge would be useful for collecting/verifying attendee data by connecting with the registration system.

     

    Note: I do not know if the contract for the use of meeting space within a convention center limits the use of RF devices.  I know they allow the use of wireless microphone, presentation points, etc.

    Amber Sky Weather Station

     

    The Amber Pi Design Kit has the basic elements of a weather station with the added benefit of the bidirectional wireless bridge, which could be used to send the weather data to a base station.  This would allow you to examine the weather before leaving work for play.

     

    Build Plan:

     

    Using "Spare part (outdoor unit) for Professional Wireless Weather Station, MS-WH-SP-WS02", obtainable from aliexpress.com supplier for (US) $43.00 (8/24/2019)

    I would replace the radiation-shield (temperature and barometer case) with an alternative design that could house the Raspberry PI 3 and  Amber Pi Design Kit.  Additional circuitry and programming would be required to interface the Amber Pi Design Kit to the weather station parts.

     

    Stretch Goal:

     

    • Add a solar panel, charger, and battery for powering the station.  This would increase the mobility of the unit.

    Amber PI Roaster

    Mental enhancement through the consumption of freshly brewed coffee made from your own roasted green coffee beans.

     

    The Amber Pi Design Kit would monitor the temperature and airflow throughout the roasting process.  The bidirectional wireless bridge would provide the ability to monitor and control the temperature and fan speed remotely.  The three-axis linear accelerometer would turn off the heater if it was not upright or exhibiting excessive movement (the fan could then be set to high speed to cool the unit).

     

    The roaster would utilize a Hot Air Popcorn Popper, Raspberry PI 3, and an Amber Pi Design Kit.  The kit would provide the ability to capture live data on a remote laptop.  The transmitted data would provide realtime tracking, used for a time-based performance graph, which could facilitate the duplication of a good roast.

     

    Concept Design:

     

    • Obtain a 1500w hot air popcorn popper.
    • Modify hot air popper to separate the control of the fan and heating element.
    • Use PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) to control the speed of a 20v DC powered fan
    • Attach two k-type thermocouples, for tracking bean and environmental temperatures (one probe within the bean mass and the other above the mass).
    • The heating elements would be controlled using D2425 solid-state relay.

    The portable size would make it possible to use at work or play.

     

    My stretch goal:

     

    Connect the exhaust to a cyclone dust collector with venting outdoors (collect chaff from the roasted beans), utilizing an IoT controlled power switch.

    I have a clock that synchronizes to the atomic clock in Colorado. I also have clocks that synchronize to GPS satellites. My computer synchronizes to some internet reference. My phone synchronizes to some network time. The atomic clock and the GPS match well. The computer and the phone match well. But the atomic/GPS time does not match the network time.

    That being said, I no longer wear a watch and generally don't carry a phone because clocks are ubiquitous - time is everywhere.

    However I always need more time, it is too bad that I have to waste time reading the time.

    Hi, first of all I want to say that I have not experimented with development boards before, I am interested in this and I want to learn how to use these boards in various projects such as media server for home ,  firewall, NAS,or to use it for designing an automatic ventilation system for the home.

    I would use a custom pressure sensor using copper tape and place it under my tablecloth. My cat walks on the table. I would like to know how often. I have thought about building an Archimedes screw using a 3.3v servo to crank cat toys out from a height (pvc, shaft with thread, balls with bells), so when the cat gets on the table, a cat toy is released in the next room and bounces loudly onto the floor. It might be possible to kill the ceiling fan when this response happens so it is easier for the cat to hear the toy hit the ground. The next step would be using an URF to trigger the toy before he makes it to the table. If I can find a cheap laser, I could couple two servos together to make a turret and draw the cat away from the table, it hears the toy drop, and table is fat-free. I am working on a stereoscopic field depth detector, and could try to capture data in that system, too, cat photos and such, but that's really a stretch.

    Yes! That would be one advantage. How about this: Move it forward during a meeting to get out early(remote side could egg it forward.)

    True, True.

     

    I think your project also has another advantage - in addition to having a clock that shows the same time at home and at work, you could add a way to mess with the time to have it be in your advantage in the (rare?) event you might be late. image
