Is aging in our living population becoming a crucial problem? Less BB and More Aged people!! Can technology improves the lifestyles of aged people?

Think about this: Is aging in our living population becoming a crucial problem? Look around your social circle and you will know the answer. I have more elder relatives than the younger relatives say I have a total of 20 uncles and aunties from both sides of my dad and mum. However I have less than 20 cousins. Does that shows a simple analogy of less bb and more aged people. Our government has already gained the foresight that in the near future, our country is going to have the aging problem.

Since this is a real life problem happening around us, we must face the fact that the aged people are growing and how we can help them to have a better living conditions. As one person gets older, there are many aspects in the person life that needs to be taken care of. Say for instance, the health of an old man is definitely not as good as a young chap. The old man is more vulnerable to sickness. Can we introduce some technologies into the lifestyles of the aged people to make their lives happier and brighter and safer?

Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology are the key research areas focusing on this problem.

Please provide me with your comments and ideas on how technology can improvethe lifestyles of aged people. By contributing now, you are also making your life in future more comfortable because you do aged!! image

There have been great advances in medical technology recently. Miniturization, power saving technologies and wireless communication breakthroughs have enabled a new wave of medical devices. Remote diagnostic units can allow patients to either self diagnose or can remotely report results back to a central server. This also free up doctor's time for more serious patients, so they get better care.

There are also advances in prosthetic limbs/pacemakers and other medical devices which should allow patients a better quality of life

Medical research has grown tremendously for past decade to fight against diseases, virus and various sickness. There is no way until now that we can prevent aging from happening, which is against the natural divine. Even with several researches on cloning of organs and newly borns, they are still not able to solve the greying population. The fact is we will become old and die one day. So can put our minds together to think of using different technologies to improve the lifestyles of aged people? Any recommendation or suggestion?

Perhaps an automated machine that can scan the blood pressure, temperature and it can diagnose simple sickness like flu, fever and dispense the right medication. This might be useful to the doctor so that more time will be given to more serious patient.

You have raised an interesting idea on how to free out our busy doctor from routine sickness like flu so that the doctor can concentrate on critical patient. I will see the automated biosensing device to be used as the first medical screening layer of the patient for the doctor. Just like the nurses who normally do this job, I did that as well when I was in the army. After which, the doctor is in the better position to comment on the sickness and its respective medicine.

Another more likewise simple but interesting idea? Speak up and maybe we can be of some helps to explore on your idea together.

There are many products now being developed which utilises Bluetooth Technology to unobtrusively observe and monitor patient results and behaviour. This ranges from having medical tests in the privacy of your own bathroom. The results being send to your computer/router by Bluetooth and then to your own doctor via the internet. Or, to monitoring movement “has the vulnerable person got out of bed today?” and if not notify someone to provide assistance. This allows independence to be maintained and relevant support to be provided at an appropriate time. In situations where 24 hour support to vulnerable people is being withdrawn the use of these systems is growing.

Yes indeed, it would be interesting to know more about this kind of automated system. Can you provide some market available products?

There are a lot of technologies out there that are going to make a different to this ageing population problem. Some examples can be found at http://www.intechopen.com/articles/show/title/engineering-better-electric-powered-wheelchairs-to-enhance-rehabilitative-and-assistive-needs-of-dis. Please have a look and give your comments here. I am the editor of this rehabilitation engineering book and I can give you some of my opinions.
