Can sensors on a dental drill and patient be integrated on monitor?

I am connecting sensors ie accelerometer,gyro, etc to a dental drill. The bit is 16 mm long and angles out 75 degrees. Sensors can be connected to the mandible or maxillae.  The goal is to drill the first osteotomy(hole for the implant)  hold the drill in position until a fairly accurate line segment is recorded and shows an a monitor (ideally Bluetooth to an iPad)  position the drill in place  for the next osteotomy and hold until the second line segment shows a favorable angle. 

Question? Can sensor data show a record a line segment at an angle proportional to the drill. Can the be recorded and imprinted on screen while next osteotomy is prepared. Can a sensor on the mandible relate the position relative to drill  ideally the segments are perpendicular to drill. Are two accelerometers necessary to plot the drill angle

    Hello Richard,

     

    You can'y possibly use accelerometers and gyros for this. You don't quote precision and accuracy but I would think you need to know the relative positions of the devices within a mm or two and  a degree or two. A tiny inertial guidance system could not hope to achive this.

    The usual way to do this kind of thing is to use a camera (probably more than one). The cameras are cheap and easy to get but the software will be difficult and it will need serious processing power -  this is a multi year multi million £/$ project.

     

    An alternative approach would be a mechanical link between the two drills, either to enforce alignment or to measure it - I don't understand the process well enough to knwo how you might align the drills to the victim (oops - patient).
