Licensing Open Source Hardware

You probably know that there is currently an Open Source Hardware Definition in discussion.

I like some of the parts. I don not like some of the parts.

But the interesting question is:

What license do you like most for your content & code?

Do you allow commercial use?

For commercial users: What Hardware licenes do you like?

What license would you use for you designs (e.g. reference designs)?

BTW: I use the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike license: So everybody can use it even commercially, even if he makes money from it. As long as she or he gives me proper credit.

I think if anybody wants to use my designs for commercial use I cannot do anything against it anyway. Companies normaly have much more resources than me to go to court.

    Howdy -

I think those are really great questions.  There was a lot of conversation about this at the Open Hardware Summit before Maker Faire in NYC.  Check out the new statement of principles and v0.4 draft definition:

There are several videos from the Summit on UStream though unfortunately I'm having trouble finding the Legal Panel:

I don't personally have any finished designs to share with the community yet or any existing products, but I would very interested as well to learn how others have licensed their work.

    Cheers,

    Drew

The guys over at buildr have a very nice discussion why they have choosen MIT license for their code.

I think it reflects the problems very good: On the one hand I want that everybody is able to use my code (hence a liberal license like MIT) on the other hand I want to encourage them to share their additions as well (hence using GPL).

The same is true for non code parts: Share alike or non share alike for Creative Commons liceneses? Commercial or non commercial?

Any industry open source evangelist around to share it's company policy? (possibly not image)

But to get things straight: If a small business wants to hinder somebody from stealing your ideas no license helps. At least I do not have the money to hire some lawyers to fight a big company.
