Um the cheapest package I could see there was one of the pad limited versions(1500 pads) at a mere $299. I think the whole thing is just an advert riding on these already opensource materials. Poorly thought…

Really John This is Open Source Hardware, yet your most basic software package to use these 'free' designs starts at $5000. By comparison there is a free Mega board design within Eagle. Plus Arduino provide…

By comparison there is a free Mega board design within Eagle.

Plus Arduino provide free Eagle references on the site.

I doubt any hobbyist, maker, or student would be willing to pay for something that can be done for free otherwise.

Could you perhaps elaborate on why PADS is a better alternative and why it would be worth the 5k$ price tag ?

Edit: The Designer Schematic & Layout tools seem to have a 864$ price tag. Better than 5k$, but can it do all that is required? It's still expensive considering a target audience of hobbyists, makers and students though.

$864 per year (i.e. subscription) from what I can tell.

One model I like is seeing organizations these days aim for sub-$100 software products for individuals with community-led support (i.e. no guaranteed response-time/resolution), because it helps the company

test out their latest software features on individuals, before rolling out a mature version in $$$ supported software.

Poorly thought out unfortunately as those who would be interested wouldn't have the money so why?!?

Maybe the page I looked at was misleading ...

None the Less it does appear to be an advert for the software, given that the designs are free anyway.

Pity we don't the other version of the like
