disability products need advices

hi I am working on a project at the moment what it is.

It is a arm add that you wear on your arm from upper arm to lower with a hinge at the elbow it will be moved with a linear actuator what is servo controlled.

I have made a test model that works well using a servo to move it. I tested it using a pot and two switches this is good for rehab.

What I wont to do is control it using brain control as I am disabled, can get something that already does what I wont but its cost is stupid (I could by a house cheaper) and the way its made is not very practicable.

I wont to make my own what I need is some advice in how to go about this, not the piece that goes on the arm, the control mechanism is what I need advice on any comments will be well revived as I am not all that good at doing coding and electronics I am still learning how to do this. making things is what I am good at

I would like to use one of the wireless EEG head set you can get,  the actuators I will more than likely use is from here www.firgelli.com.

it does not matter to much what the controller runs on as long as it is some thing I can put together and it will work every time I use it.

I will be doing two types of arm movers (that is what I will call it) one that just goes onto your arm and another one that will have a hard mount for going on to a wheel chair, its just a different top mount.

I will be doing this as a open hardware as the company s that supply this sort of equipment here in NZ uselessly make a 1000% profit on these sort of things.

an example is a company here sells a rubberband arm assist device for $10000 NZ dollars they buy it for around 800 to $1000 us.

what I am making will cost around $900 to $2000 depending on liquidity of components

Hi Daniel - Sorry that I didn't write to you sooner but  I do not have the knowledge that you are looking for. However since reading your question I came accross this information on the internet. Check out this web site:  http://www.dekaresearch.com/deka_arm.shtml  . This is the web site for the man who designed some of the most inovative medical and medical assist devices ever. When I saw his article on the "Luke" arm I thought about you. Perhaps you can direct your question at them to see what will happen.

    Good Luck  John

right heres an update to this protect there are some small changes need to the arm attachment only miner changes.

it works very well with a servo and buttons one for up one for down using momentary buttons release it stops moving the only problem it cant move a lot of weight without putting a very big servo on it that would make to to heavy for how i wont it to be. (attached to arm not attached to wheel chair something that can be worn)

i need to work on the EEG and EMG control for this thing thats not hard just a higher cost I have played with EEG control my arms to buggered to test it, so its on the back burner.

I will be testing it with emg soon when i get a EMG.

just on a side note this thing i am making, parts for it can be removed form big photocopiers and attained from hardware stores or if you are like me my sons toy box (mecca-no) he does not now yet.

its simple what I am making when finished I am going to give it all away to my local MDA in NZ.

onces this is finished my next project is to have the availability to mount this to a wheelchair so it can do more moments i.e feed your self (food, drink) programed or assist only (support arm movement only not to do all the work as that makes thing get worse faster)

I already know some people will think or do thats a lot of work buts its not if you think of it as support only its built to support but it can do the work for you. when people see what i am make they will think that wont work its to simple but it does.

its built like a Russian tank verses a germen tank in WW2 quality verses ruggedness (ruggedness works every time)

    disclaimer

no affiances meant buy comment sorry if i have upset anyone

    Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the update on your progress. I am interested to see what you come up with. When you have a prototype please send a picture.

    Thanks John
