Open Source x86 Laptop. What features would you like to see?

Open Lunchbox is an Open Hardware and Software Laptop Project. Some of the problems with other open laptop projects in the past have been either not being x86, not being open or not being an actual laptop.

OpenLunchbox.com will have all the design and fabrication files open and free. Uses a 4-core AMD64 CPU with HD8400 series graphics. Is an actual laptop mainboard and laptop. It's powerful enough for everyday use and a low cost design without sacrificing quality and reliability. The design is flexible enough to be used in several laptops with different sets of features or as an open development platform. The coreboot source will be hosted at coreboot.org GIT repo. Open Lunchbox will also provide complete assembled mainboards and laptops.

    I just went over the list of features and I have to say they look pretty amazing, especially with having 10 total USB's which is phenomenal for a laptop.

    Overall the features that are already listed seem to be a good fit. Albeit, while looking over these features, some questions popped into my mind.

     

    • You mentioned "low cost design". After looking over the features, I am wondering if you could share an estimate of the approximate cost for the consumer?
    • With this being Open Source, will there be the option of having an OS other than Linux?
    • Just to clarify a little confusion, will this be ready to go out of the box, a DIY Kit, or both? How will this effect the cost?
    • Being "powerful enough for everyday use" I have to ask how this will fair with gaming, and other high resource applications?

    Any information would be appreciated but I understand if some information cannot be shared at this time.

    Price is driven by quantity. We get our parts from the same markets in Shenzhen that laptop OEM/ODM's do and at around the same prices. It's a please copy this design. Hopefully some suppliers will do so and give birth to a standard for building your own laptops the same as everyone has been building their desktops for years.

     

    You can use any OS you wish that coreboot supports and that there are drivers for.

     

    There will be source files for the entire design, complete boards, parts as well as complete assembled laptops.

    There has been quite the dispute of Laptop vs. Desktop for many of years now with Desktop's taking the lead simply because of being able to upgrade them when they become obsolete or when one simply just needs that extra boost in performance. If a design team would just simply design a GPU that is interchangeable for a laptop motherboard, then the laptop could very much so take the lead in that depute since you can already upgrade RAM, CPU and HDD in laptops.

     

    Aside from all that, thank you for all the information you provided. I look forward in seeing this project unfold further.

    Comprehensive documentation of the project might seem like an easy thing but so many projects don't have good documentation.
