element14 DIY Drawdio Kit - Maker Faire Giveaway

http://www.element14.comimage

Background:

Jay Silver of MIT Media Lab created the clever & fun Drawdio:

http://www.drawdio.com/

The Drawdio is a pencil that lets you draw music or, in more general sense, turn almost anything into a "theremin"!

Thanks to the power of Open Source Hardware, Limor Fried of Adafruit Industrires was able to design a fantastic DIY electronics kit based on Jay's Drawdio design:

http://www.ladyada.net/make/drawdio/index.html

The circuit board, or PCB, was designed with CadSoft EAGLE as are all of Adafruit's kits.  They also release full design files and source code (when software is used) for all their project & kits.

Instructions:

At Maker Faire NYC, the element14 booth will be giving away Drawdio kits containing the PCB from Adafruit and electronics components sourced from the element14 Store.  If you received such a kit, then please use the Adafruit Drawdio v1.1 instructions to build your kit:

SOLDER IT! @  http://www.ladyada.net/make/drawdio/solder.html

NOTE: The ceramic capacitors included in the element14 kit differ slightly from the illustrations in adafruit's instructions:

  • Both ceramic capacitors in the element14 kit are yellow.  The smaller one, marked '681' and packaged on cardboard, is C1 (680pF).
  • The larger yellow capacitor is C3 (0.1 uF).
  • Also, the 300K resistor RB included with the kit is dark brown, but of course has the same colour code (Orange Black Yellow Gold) indicated in the instructions.

Please also note that Adafruit can not provide support for these element14 Drawdio kits.  Please post any questions or concerns in the element14 Drawdio kit discussion thread in this Open Source Hardware Group.

Hope everyone is enjoying their element14 Drawdios!

I was thrilled we were able to giveaway this terrific kit created by Adafruit & Jay Silver.  I'd love to hear about the experience of building the kit that everyone had - and any creative modification you might have made!

    Cheers,

    Drew
