A Crude Awakening

awinning
awinning over 15 years ago

I watched this movie on Saturday, and I was pretty shocked. I know the movie will be slanted slightly to fit the producer's agenda, and that drama makes great movies, but they talked with some really senior government and oil industry officials, which is pretty out the ordinary for these types of movies. One thing it does show is we have to move away from an oil based economy as soon as possible to prevent wholescale catastrophic changes when there is not enough oil to fulfill our growing demands.

With oil prodicing states deliberately overestimating future reserves to proeserve present quotas, how much oil do we really have to meet growing demands? Do we have the estimated twenty years left to ensure a less disturbing changeover?

Should the billions of dollars spent combating global warming be moved to investigating efficient alternative energy solutions? After all that would help solve both problems!

I'd thouroughly recommend this movie to everyone, and linked it below. Have you seen it? What do you think?

    Hi Alistair,

Yeah peak oil, it's a scary prediction, I first read something about it 4 or 5 years ago.

I think a lot of people just don't realise how dependant on oil we are, it's not being able to fill your car tank that's the worry, its food production, shipping and pretty much everything else, without cheap oil there will be crippling inflation that will make the great depression look like a walk in the park.

It's an interesting point you make about switching the investment from combating global warming to alternative energy though I think a lot of the initiatives for combating global warming tend to either involve alternative energy solutions or help reduce oil usage (though not dependency) e.g. this travel 5 miles less a week campaign the UK government is promoting.

do you happen to know if this movie is downloadable?

There was an interesting interview with Tony Hayward the chief exec of BP on radio 4 this morning in which he stated that the peak for gasoline consumption was actually reached in 2007 and that global production would never again reach these levels. He also made some predictions as to the likely price barriers for crude based on observations of production cost and consumer behavior. He also made some predictions as to the likely upper and lower price points for a barrel of crude based on the economic of oil production and consumer behavior.

It's definitely worth a listen in refernce to the above.

You can listen to the interview on-line via the BBC's website.
